Three Types of Bodhisattvas

Mahayana teachings describe three classic styles of bodhisattvas, each symbolized by how they guide beings toward awakening. Presented here in a simple, sequential order.

Leading from the Front

The king-like bodhisattva seeks enlightenment first, then uses that awakened power to guide others. Like a wise ruler who goes ahead of the procession, they aim to become a Buddha as swiftly as possible so they can help beings more effectively.

Crossing Together

The boatman or ferryman-like bodhisattva travels with beings across the river of samsara. They vow to reach the far shore of enlightenment together with all beings, sharing the journey step by step.

Letting Others Go First

The shepherd-like bodhisattva sends the flock ahead and stays behind. They wish for all beings to attain Buddhahood before themselves, embodying radical self-sacrifice and boundless care.
